QA interview prep for freshers: questions and how to answer

Fresher interviews for testing roles tend to repeat the same themes. You do not need memorised speeches. You need clear, simple answers in your own words.

Questions you should expect

  • What is the difference between severity and priority?
  • What is the difference between a test case and a test scenario?
  • What are the parts of a bug report?
  • What is regression testing, and why does it matter?
  • Explain boundary value analysis with an example.
  • What is the bug life cycle?
  • How would you test a login page?

A simple answer structure

Give the definition in one sentence, then an example, then, if it fits, where you used it. For boundary values: "It means testing at the edges of allowed input. If an age field accepts 18 to 60, I test 17, 18, 60 and 61. I used this when I wrote cases for a signup form in my practice project."

Talk about your own practice

Interviewers like specifics. Be ready to walk through one project: what you tested, how many cases you wrote, one bug you found, and how you reported it. If you have not done one yet, do a small one this week.

Scenario questions

"How would you test a search box?" has no single right answer. Think aloud: valid terms, no results, empty input, special characters, very long text, speed, phone screens. Showing how you think counts more than a perfect list.

When you do not know

Say so, then say how you would find out. "I have not used that tool, but I would read its documentation and try it on a sample project" is a fine answer. Guessing and getting caught is worse.

Before the day

  • Read the job description and match it to your skills.
  • Practise out loud with a friend.
  • Prepare two questions to ask them, such as how the testing team works.

Preparation improves your chances, but no resource can promise an offer. Keep applying and keep practising.
